I started out as the partner in the passenger seat - I’d get the occasional turn at the helm, but never enough to really feel confident in charge of the boat.
So I bought my own boat, crewed on charters and took any chance I could get to fish with people who knew far more than me.
One thing I learned is that the more time you spend actually doing something, the more useful you become - and the more opportunities tend to come your way.
The problem - especially for women - is getting those first opportunities.
She’s Got Game exists to create more of those chances for women to actually do the things themselves, so they can then give those opportunities to others.
I grew up in, on and around the water in Scotland - canoeing, sailing, clambering up gorges and jumping off wharves...
I moved to New Zealand in my mid 20s and got into yacht racing, which led to me buying my first boat - a 29ft yacht - and refitting it before sailing it offshore to the Pacific Islands.
Living in the Bay of Islands, it was hard not to get into fishing too. But it wasn't until I fell head-first down the game fishing rabbit hole that I really developed a passion for it.
I've crewed on game fishing charters, worked on a commercial cray boat, fished with some legendary skippers, bought my own trailer boat and soaked up every bit of knowledge I could from those who knew far more than me. Now I'm keen to share that knowledge with other women, because I've seen the passion women have for fishing and boating, but I've also experienced first hand how hard it can be to get opportunities to do more.
That's why I started She's Got Game.
